5 Starting Points for Redesigning Rooms

Décor Interiors puts you in charge of planning your room designs. However, you might need some starting points for redesigning those spaces. Our Chesterfield, MO furniture showroom can help.

Determine Room Shape

Maybe you have a square or rectangle room, or perhaps you have an L- or U-Shaped one. Determining the shape of your room will help you choose the furniture that fits in each space and will help you maximize the use of each room. For instance, you can decide what size of sectional sofa you can place in your living room or what size mattress will fit in a child’s room according to your overall layout.

Measure Room Size

In addition to shape, room size also determines suitable furniture dimensions. When designing a room, it’s important not to overcrowd, or under-fill, the space. Too-large pieces or too much furniture will make a room feel smaller and might make your room less functional. If a lot of traffic goes through a small area, you’ll want to choose smaller pieces that won’t obstruct any pathways.

Pick a Focal Point

Many room designs begin with a focal piece that gives inspiration for the rest of the room. If you have a favorite piece, whether it’s a sofa, area rug, dining table, or artwork, let that piece guide the rest of your design.

You can pull colors from the focal piece to use in other accents around the room to tie the design together. If you’re working with an interior designer, the piece you select to be the focal point will help give the designer an idea of what you’re going for.

Choose Positions

One of our favorite parts of interior design is watching the whole plan come together. Before you have your furniture and accessories carried into the room, use painter’s tape on the floor to help you decide where to place everything. Using simple rectangles to mimic where you’ll place each piece will ensure everything fits and lessens the time you’ll spend rearranging!

Deciding how to arrange your furniture can be tricky, but if you planned ahead by measuring your room early in the process, you shouldn’t run into any problems!

Coordinate the Colors

Choosing a color scheme for a room ensures everything will flow perfectly. If you’re working with a designer, let them know if you prefer a neutral palette or something more bold, like this year’s trending navy tones.

For color ideas, you might want to check out our Décor Interiors Design Center. You can even have your pieces customized to better coordinate the right match of solids and prints.
